YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROJECT

What is the Youth Empowerment Project?
The Youth Empowerment Project provides teens with the information they need to identify and prevent dating and family violence. Resources and support for teens experiencing a violent dating or family situation are provided on this web site (www.WebofFriends.org) and through a series of public service announcements created for teens, by teens.

What is the Public Service Announcement (PSA)
Competition and who can enter?

The Maricopa Association of Governments invites junior high and high school students and/or teens, ages 12-18, residing in Maricopa County to create concepts for speaking to other teens about dating violence. Teens are encouraged to creatively incorporate required messages into specified categories. All entries are reviewed by a panel of judges, including teens. Entries are judged on their content or concept, not on how professionally they are produced. First, second and third place winners are determined in each category. Winners are announced and prizes (cash, gift certificates, and/or other prizes) given at a PSA Competition Recognition Event. The first place winner in each category is professionally produced and distributed throughout the region.

When is the next PSA Competition?
The 2008 PSA Competition is now closed. Entries were accepted from Sept. 27 – Dec. 14, 2007. This year’s categories included radio spots and electronic invitations (e-invites) to visit this web site (www.WebofFriends.org). All entries were judged in January 2008. Winners were announced on March 5, 2008 at the PSA Competition Recognition Event held at Suns-Diamondbacks Education Academy. The winners were presented with certificates and American Express gift cards. The next PSA Competition has not yet been announced.
